Budapest in spring: what to expect in April and May
Updated:
Is spring a good time to visit Budapest?
Yes — spring is one of the two best times to visit Budapest. April and May offer mild temperatures (12–24°C), manageable tourist crowds, hotel prices 20–30% below summer peaks, and the full range of activities. May is particularly good: outdoor terraces open, the baths are pleasant without summer overcrowding, and the city feels energetic without being overwhelmed.
Budapest in spring: the local favourite time
Ask a Budapest resident when to visit and most will say May. Not June — too hot. Not September (though also excellent) — too close to summer’s tourist fatigue. May specifically, when the parks are in bloom, the Danube is reflecting late-afternoon light, and the city is running at full speed without the crush of July.
This guide covers what to expect from March through May, with honest assessments of each month.
Month by month
March
March is the transition from winter. The first half of the month feels like late winter: grey, occasional frost, restaurants with terraces still shuttered. The second half starts to feel like spring.
March 15 — National Day: Hungary’s commemoration of the 1848 revolution against Habsburg rule. Public celebrations, speeches at the National Museum, and flags on public buildings. Not a major tourist event but worth being aware of — public transport may be busier and some government buildings are closed.
Budapest Spring Festival (late March to mid-April): classical music, opera, and arts festival using the city’s major venues. The most culturally significant event of the spring calendar. See the Budapest Spring Festival website (btf.hu) for current year dates and programmes.
The thermal baths are running normally in March and relatively uncrowded. See /guides/outdoor-baths-in-winter/ for what the outdoor pools are like in early spring.
Verdict on March: Good for cultural and indoor-focused trips, indoor thermal bath visits, and low-price hotel stays. Not ideal for outdoor café culture or warm evening walks.
April
April is generally Budapest’s first properly good spring month. Temperatures settle between 12–20°C, blossoms appear in City Park and along the Danube, and outdoor terraces begin opening — gradually at first, then more reliably by mid-April.
Budapest Spring Festival (if running into April — check current year dates): the last concerts and events of the festival programme.
Outdoor spaces: City Park has cherry blossoms in early-to-mid April, and the walking areas around Vajdahunyad Castle and the zoo are particularly pleasant. The Buda hills walking paths start attracting hikers from April onwards.
Hotels: April prices are 20–30% below July–August peaks. Availability is good. Central boutique hotels are bookable 1–2 weeks ahead for most April dates.
The Széchenyi Baths in April are excellent — the outdoor pool is comfortable once temperatures pass 15°C, and the crowds are a fraction of summer volumes.
Verdict on April: Good month with increasing outdoor options. Some variability in weather; pack a light waterproof. Earlier April is more like late March; by late April, the city is genuinely spring.
May
May is the strongest argument for a spring Budapest trip. Temperatures 17–24°C, evenings warm enough for outdoor dining without a jacket, long days (sunset around 20:30), and tourist volumes that feel manageable rather than crushing.
What opens or expands in May:
- Restaurant and bar terraces fully operational
- Outdoor pools at Széchenyi comfortable for extended sessions
- Palatinus open-air pools on Margaret Island (opening timing varies — typically May)
- Day trips to the Danube Bend and Lake Balaton become practical and pleasant
- The ruin-bar courtyards in District VII move fully outdoors
May events: Various street festivals, outdoor food markets, and arts events occur throughout May. Budapest’s cultural calendar in May is full but not as structured as the Spring Festival or the summer festivals — check the Budapest tourism calendar (see gotohungary.com or the Budapest Convention Bureau) for current year events.
Hotels in May: Starting to rise from April lows but still 10–20% below peak summer rates. Weekend availability in late May (when the peak summer season is noticeably beginning) can become tighter — book a few weeks ahead.
Verdict on May: The single best month to visit Budapest for most visitors. Warm, light, manageable, and with the full range of activities available.
Spring activities
Thermal baths in spring
The outdoor pools at Széchenyi are running all year, but they come into their own in April and May. The combination of warm water and mild spring air is one of the most pleasurable bath experiences. Crowds are a fraction of summer volumes, which means more space in the outdoor pool and shorter locker queues.
Széchenyi day tickets are the same price year-round. See /guides/szechenyi-baths-guide/ for the full guide and /guides/best-thermal-baths-in-budapest/ for the comparison with other baths.
Danube cruise in spring
The sunset cocktail cruise is excellent in May — long golden evenings on the Danube, the Parliament lit as the sun sets, and a comfortable temperature for open-deck viewing. The cruise season is in full swing from April but is far less crowded than July. See /guides/sunset-cocktail-cruises/.
City Park and green spaces
City Park in April–May is one of Budapest’s finest pleasures — the blossoms around Vajdahunyad Castle, the open lawns, and the easy access to the zoo and Széchenyi make it a natural spring day. The Budapest Zoo is at its best in spring: young animals, blooming botanical garden, and comfortable walking temperatures. See /guides/budapest-zoo-and-aquarium/.
Day trips from Budapest in spring
Spring conditions make day trips considerably more appealing than the full summer heat:
Danube Bend: Szentendre, Visegrád, and Esztergom are all excellent in April–May. The river is high from snowmelt, the hills are green, and the towns are active without summer crowds. See /guides/danube-bend-day-trip/ and /guides/szentendre-day-trip/.
Lake Balaton: Opening for spring from mid-April. The lake is quieter than summer but the landscape (particularly the Badacsony wine hills) is beautiful. See /guides/lake-balaton-day-trip/.
Eger: The Baroque city in northern Hungary is excellent in May — wine tastings at the valley of the winegrowers (Szépasszony-völgy), the castle, and Egri Bikavér (Bull’s Blood) red wine in full spring enjoyment. See /guides/eger-day-trip/.
Walking the city
Spring is the best season for Budapest’s free walking sights. Gellért Hill in May — blossoms on the slopes, warm air, long views — is significantly more enjoyable than the same walk in July heat or January cold. Fisherman’s Bastion at dusk in May is quintessential Budapest. See /guides/gellert-hill-and-citadella/ and /guides/fishermans-bastion-guide/.
Practical spring tips
Packing for April: Light layers plus a waterproof. Budapest April rain is not heavy but it is frequent. A compact umbrella or packable rain jacket takes minimal space.
Packing for May: Light clothing, sunscreen for outdoor days. Evening temperatures can still be cool at the start of May — a light jacket for late evening.
Transport: BKK public transport runs normally in spring. The airport bus 100E operates year-round. See /guides/getting-around-budapest/.
Restaurant bookings: April — usually unnecessary except for special events. May weekends — book 2–3 days ahead for popular spots. Michelin restaurants: book 1–2 weeks ahead year-round.
Festivals and events calendar: Check the Budapest tourism website or the Hungarian Tourism Agency (gotohungary.com) for current-year events in the spring calendar. The Budapest Spring Festival (btf.hu) is the headline event.

Frequently asked questions about Budapest in spring
What is the weather like in Budapest in spring?
March: 5–14°C, variable. April: 12–20°C, mostly pleasant with occasional rain. May: 17–24°C, reliably warm. Spring in Budapest brings increasing sunshine and long evenings from May onwards. The change from late winter (cold, grey) to May (warm, green) is relatively rapid. April can have rain; May is more reliably dry and sunny. What is the Budapest Spring Festival?
The Budapest Spring Festival (Budapesti Tavaszi Fesztivál) is a major classical music, opera, and arts festival held in late March to mid-April. It covers concert programmes at the State Opera House, the Palace of Arts (Müpa), St Stephen's Basilica, and venues across the city. It is one of the most significant cultural events in Central Europe, drawing international performers. Check the festival website (btf.hu) for current year's programme. Are the thermal baths good in spring?
Excellent — and better than summer for those who prefer lower crowds. The outdoor pools at Széchenyi warm up through April and are comfortable from late April onwards. The combination of mild spring air and warm water (38°C) is one of the most pleasant thermal bath experiences. Queue times are shorter than in summer. May is particularly good.Is March too early to visit Budapest?
March is early spring — the weather is variable (5–14°C), outdoor terraces may not yet be open, and some facilities run reduced winter hours. March 15 (National Day) is an active public holiday with city events. If you have flexibility, April or May is more reliably pleasant than March. March is fine for indoor-focused trips (museums, baths, coffee houses). Is Easter busy in Budapest?
Easter brings some increase in visitors, but Budapest does not have the same Easter tourism pattern as Rome or Prague. Hungarian Easter traditions — particularly in rural areas — involve water-sprinkling customs (locsolkodás). In Budapest, Easter weekend is a minor peak with some restaurants and shops closed on Good Friday or Easter Monday. Worth checking specific closure dates for planned visits.
