When to visit Budapest — our verdict
Best overall: May and September. Warm days (18–24 °C), manageable crowds, and good value. Terrace bars are open, outdoor pools at the thermal baths are running, and city parks are at their best. These shoulder months are the sweet spot for most travelers.
Best for budget: January and February. Accommodation prices drop by 30–50%, flights are cheapest, and the thermal baths are magical in cold air. The Christmas market buzz is gone, but museums, cafes, and ruin bars are all open and uncrowded.
Best for atmosphere: late November to early January. Budapest's Christmas markets (Vörösmarty tér and the Basilica) are among Europe's finest. The Széchenyi outdoor pool steaming in winter air is iconic.
Avoid if you hate crowds: July and August. Sziget Festival (mid-August) attracts 500 000+ visitors. Prices peak, queues lengthen. Book everything months ahead or choose a different time.
