Széchenyi
Best for: parties, groups, outdoor pools, first-timers
Budapest's largest and most famous bath, built in 1913. The outdoor pools with their Neo-Baroque yellow palace backdrop are iconic. Weekend sparty (spa party) nights fill the outdoor pools with music and floats. Busiest bath in the city — arrive early or book online to skip the queue.
Gellért
Best for: couples, elegance, Art Nouveau architecture
The grandest bath in Budapest, housed in the landmark Gellért Hotel on the Danube. Its Art Nouveau indoor hall with stained glass and marble columns is extraordinary. The outdoor wave pool is a summer highlight. Pricier but worth it for the setting. Note: check current renovation status before visiting.
Rudas
Best for: Ottoman history, atmosphere, adults only sections
Founded in 1550 under Ottoman rule, Rudas is Budapest's most authentic historic bath. The octagonal central pool under a star-domed ceiling is breathtaking. A rooftop pool offers panoramic Danube views. The Friday and Saturday night sessions are for adults only and extremely atmospheric. No children allowed at most times.
Lukács
Best for: locals, calm atmosphere, budget
The most local of Budapest's baths — you'll find neighbourhood regulars doing their daily soak rather than tour groups. Historic courtyard pools, a relaxed pace, and lower prices make Lukács ideal for an authentic, unhurried experience. Family-friendly during the day.
